Endoscopic Lobectomy for Lung cancer (VATS Lobectomy)
I was the first surgeon to bring endoscopic lobectomy to the Tees region. This is a less invasive method for removing lung cancers from patients that has been shown to enhance recovery without impairing the quality of the operation
I also teach this technique to other surgeons and I have several videos on this on youtube either from Edinburgh where I learnt this technique or from James Cook Hospital.
Of note not all tumours are suitable for this technique, but I talk to each patient about their tumour and we do offer an endoscopic technique where possible.

Endoscopic Thymectomy ( VATS Thymectomy)
The Thymus is a little known organ in front of the heart and behind the breastplate. Occasionally a tumour can arise in this organ and also occasionally this organ can cause or potentate the effects of a muscle wasting disease called myasthenia gravis
We were the first in the region to offer removal endoscopically and there is a news story about this here

FIRST IN THE UK TO PERFORM RADIOLABELLED NODULE EXCISION
We were very pleased to be the first in the UK to lead a new way of removing lung nodules suspicious of cancer using radioactivity. The radioactive substance is placed next to the suspicious area in a CT scanner and then I can use a geiger counter to find the area using endoscopic surgery. We are currently leading a study in this area to prove its effectiveness in cancer surgery

Microlobectomy
I have developed a new way of doing lobectomies which seems to be having very positive effects on the speed of our patient's recovery.

Joining the best in the World
I am delighted to be part of the Annual International VATS symposium where surgeons from all over the world come together to share their ideas.
